Washington DC’s children deserve a world-class museum to spark their imagination and encourage them to dream. Steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As Communications Specialist, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
what you’ll do
As Communications Specialist, jointly reporting to Director of Advancement and Director of External Affairs, you will be a critical member of the Advancement Team. You will help ensure success of the Museum’s ongoing communications efforts and serve as the chief writer and editor.
Write and edit copy for all Museum materials, including emails to members and supporters, website, social media, marketing materials, and event materials;
Write and manage the production of the Museum’s first annual report in collaboration with other Advancement team members;
Support the development of the Museum’s brand voice across all materials and platforms;
Create and manage a communications calendar;
Help plan the Museum’s long-term communications strategy and support the public relations strategy;
Support other institutional communications as needed.
what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role
Bachelor’s degree. (A degree in one or more relevant fields, including journalism, marketing, communications, and/or museum studies is preferred.)
1–3 years of communications experience, which could include internships.
Exceptional writing and communication skills, including creative writing, editing, social media, and proofreading.
Ability to tailor messaging and adapt tone and voice to diverse audiences, including donors, Museum members, and the general public.
Ability to create engaging and creative social media content, manage social media platforms, and track social media results.
Prior experience with project management while maintaining attention to detail.
Excellent decision-making skills; ability to balance multiple time-critical projects and pivot quickly.
Team player who values a collaborative and fast-paced working environment.
