Washington DC’s children deserve a world-class museum to spark their imagination and encourage them to dream. National Children’s Museum reopens steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue in Spring 2021. This innovative, modern museum will celebrate the joy of childhood through science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As the Construction Project Manager, you will help realize this vision for the Museum’s reopening and subsequently for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
what you’ll do
This is a 3-month grant funded contract position, with the possibility of a full-time position continuing post-contract. The Construction Project Manager will report to the Director of Operations and collaborate with Exhibits and Experience Manager to ensure construction and facilities projects are completed on-time, on budget and to the best quality standards. You will be a critical member of the team. You will support the Museum’s exhibit and operations infrastructure to ensure overall success.
Coordinate with the general contractor, landlord, and cafe vendor to execute the plans for the Museum’s cafe, lighting, punch list and other construction-related projects;
Keep all stakeholders aware of the progress on projects and prepare progress reports;
Handle any environmental or local community issues that may come up during a project;
Conduct site checks to monitor progress and quality standards;
Oversee construction projects from beginning to end;
Manage the budget and estimate costs;
Ensure supplies and equipment are ordered and delivered according to schedule;
Resolve any problems that may arise and evaluate and share any risks;
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes;
Collaborate with subcontractors, engineers, architects and key team members of the project team;
Work with Director of Operations and Assistant Director of Administration and Counsel to obtain the appropriate permits and licenses from authorities for construction sites;
Design and complete preventive maintenance schedules following all relevant policies and procedures;
Oversee appropriate maintenance, supply, and repair logs;
Coordinate exhibit technical and mechanical knowledge training for floor staff and provide technical assistance as needed;
Other duties as assigned.
what we believe are important experiences + traits for this role
BSc/BA degree in Architecture, Building Science, Engineering, Construction Management, or another related field preferred;
At least 10+ years experience in development, construction, or project management;
PMP or an equivalent certification would be considered an asset;
Extensive previous work experience managing budgets for construction projects;
Excellent knowledge of construction materials and equipment;
Knowledge of structural, electrical, and mechanical systems and experience with hands-on equipment maintenance;
Working knowledge of computer systems and IT components;
Excellent troubleshooting skills;
Demonstrated ability to balance multiple projects, prioritize work, and meet aggressive deadlines.
Full-time 3-month contract position, 40 hours per week with flexible timing depending of job requirements. Potential for full-time position to be extended to a Facilities Management position with the Museum post-contract. Work location at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
